Hazardous Marine Creatures
A Guide for Cruising Yachtsmen and Women (and Divers)

You are swimming in shallow water near your boat when, "Ouch!" You have a sharp pain in your foot.  What caused it?  How serious is it?  And what do you do about it?  Here is a round-up of the usual suspects.

In all cases you should seek the earliest medical attention. You are most likely to be near the coast, probably anchored just off it, but that doesn’t mean you are anywhere near civilization. I would certainly make a PAN-PAN MEDICO emergency call on VHF Channel 16 to get expert medical advice. I would also explore the possibility of an early evacuation of the casualty; especially if the casualty was me.
